Senior Software Engineer (AI)

Location: Remote; Reston, Virginia, United States. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, protected individuals, or eligible to obtain required U.S. government authorizations.

Salary: $160,000–$230,000 USD per year, with potential bonus, equity, and other incentive compensation.

What you will do

• Work with AI engineers to ship production-ready features for federal solutions.
• Own the path from functional prototypes to stable, scalable, and accredited services.
• Design systems with security controls as first-class requirements and establish engineering best practices.
• Build and maintain hardened container images, CI/CD pipelines, and deployment artifacts for cloud, restricted, and air-gapped environments.
• Debug production issues and perform root cause analysis in environments with limited observability and access.
• Collaborate with Product to decompose requirements and mentor engineers through code reviews, design reviews, and pairing.

Requirements

• 3+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating large-scale distributed systems.
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
• Active U.S. Top Secret security clearance.
• Demonstrated ownership of production systems personally designed, debugged, and/or operated.
• Hands-on experience with Python, including async patterns, packaging, and dependency management; PostgreSQL or a comparable RDBMS; and RESTful API design, with FastAPI preferred.
• Experience with containerization and orchestration using Docker, Kubernetes, and Helm.
• Strong distributed-systems fundamentals, including idempotency, retries, eventual consistency, queueing, failure isolation, and graceful degradation.
• Experience with CI/CD, with GitLab CI preferred; automated unit, integration, and end-to-end testing; and observability through structured logging, performance metrics, and tracing.
• Strong written and verbal communication with technical and non-technical audiences.
• Ability to debug systems not personally built in environments that cannot be reproduced locally, using logs and stack traces.
• Experience using AI coding assistants while reviewing, testing, and taking ownership of all shipped code.
• Experience shipping AI-backed features such as LLM inference, agents, or retrieval, with judgment about when to use them and when to choose simpler solutions.
