Electrical Engineer Manager - Utilities Operations Lead (Energy Systems)

Location: Onsite in Groton, Connecticut, United States. Day shift with occasional after-hours or weekend response, emergency and business-continuity support, and work in laboratories, vivarium, mechanical and electrical rooms, central utility plants, maintenance shops, and manufacturing areas. Permanent U.S. work authorization is required; U.S. work visa sponsorship is not available.

Annual base salary: $99,200–$165,400. Eligible for a 12.5% bonus target and share-based long-term incentive program.

What you will do

• Lead technical oversight of medium- and low-voltage distribution systems, switchgear, substations, UPS, backup generation, and site electrical infrastructure.
• Optimize combined heat and power systems, electrical and thermal load balancing, demand control, peak-load management, load shedding, energy sourcing, and decarbonization initiatives.
• Oversee DCS, BMS, and PLC-based controls, automation integration, data acquisition, monitoring, analytics, connectivity, cybersecurity, and data integrity.
• Lead asset lifecycle management, root-cause analysis, corrective actions, preventive and predictive maintenance, and reliability-based maintenance programs.
• Support and lead capital and expense projects from concept through commissioning and turnover, including specifications, design reviews, vendor performance, and utility plant modernization.
• Manage supplier partners and contractors while supporting compliance, audits, inspections, business continuity, crisis management, and cross-functional coordination with Utilities Operations, Facilities, Manufacturing, Quality, EHS, Digital/BT, and site leadership.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related discipline.
• At least 5 years of experience with electrical generation and distribution systems, critical utilities infrastructure, cogeneration or CHP systems, and energy plant operations.
• At least 5 years of experience with energy demand management, load optimization, DCS, BMS, PLC-based automation and control systems in industrial or regulated environments, and instrumentation calibration.
• Strong knowledge of utilities operations, maintenance, and engineering.
• Comprehensive knowledge of maintenance practices and processes, strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, and proficiency with CMMS systems.
• Understanding of SLAs and KPIs, including the ability to establish and collect meaningful metrics with business-line customers and colleagues.
• Skilled proficiency with Microsoft Office, including PowerPoint, Excel, and Word.
• Ability to adjust to changing business conditions, manage competing priorities in critical operations environments, lead with diplomacy, negotiate, communicate clearly, take initiative, multitask, work with minimal supervision, and provide responsive customer service.
• Ability to perform the required physical duties, work under time constraints, respond to incidents and shutdowns, and follow gowning and personal protective equipment procedures.

Nice to have

• Advanced degree such as an MS or MBA.
• Experience with energy sourcing strategies, sustainability programs, power system studies, utilities digitalization, advanced analytics, reliability engineering, asset management, CAFM systems, AutoCAD or comparable 2D/3D modeling tools, and capital projects.
• Professional Engineer certification or equivalent.
