TL;DR
Senior Actuator Mechanical Design Engineer (Robotics): Designing and deploying torque-dense robotic actuators for joints and dynamic mechanisms with an accent on precision mechanical design, gearbox development, and production scalability. Focus on integrating motors, bearings, encoders, and drives, validating performance and durability, and solving complex challenges across prototyping, manufacturing, and robot deployment.
Location: On-site in Vancouver, Canada
Salary: CAD 120,000–170,000 per year

What you will do
- Design torque-dense actuators and integrate motors, bearings, encoders, drives, and reduction systems into robot joints.
- Develop strain wave, planetary, and other gearbox designs for high-performance robotic mechanisms.
- Create 3D CAD models, production drawings, technical specifications, and bills of materials using SolidWorks, NX, and GD&T.
- Lead rapid prototyping, mechanical testing, validation, and design iteration using additive manufacturing, CNC machining, and rapid fabrication.
- Design components for scalable manufacturing processes including casting, injection molding, and extrusion.
- Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, controls, and software engineers to integrate actuators and sensors into robotic platforms.
Requirements
- 7+ years of professional mechanical design experience in robotics, electromechanical systems, or complex hardware products.
- 3+ years of experience designing planetary, cycloidal, or strain wave actuators.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Mechatronics, or a related field.
- Strong knowledge of mechanics, statics, dynamics, materials science, precision assemblies, and mechanisms.
- Proficiency with SolidWorks, NX, or similar CAD tools and experience applying GD&T according to ASME Y14.5.
- Hands-on experience building, assembling, testing, and validating mechanical prototypes in multidisciplinary engineering environments.
Nice to have
- Experience with KISSsoft or RoMax, ball screw, lead screw, or roller screw actuator design.
- Experience with , legged, or mobile robots.
- Experience performing FEA, structural simulations, or thermal modeling of motors and gearboxes.
- Background in robotics, aerospace, automotive, or advanced hardware startups.
