Staff Software Engineer (Fullstack)

Staff Software Engineer (Ruby/React): Leading the technical direction and development of scalable digital services for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs with an accent on high-quality software architecture and the reduction of technical debt. Location: Remote (U.S.). Must be legally authorized to work in the US without sponsorship and be able to obtain a VA Public Trust security clearance.

Salary Range: $135,000 - $155,000

What you will do

• Lead technical direction and execute roadmaps for new initiatives with high autonomy.
• Collaborate with stakeholders and customers in strategic planning sessions.
• Design and implement technical solutions for complex, ambiguous product challenges.
• Reduce technical debt through refactoring, documentation, and automated testing.
• Communicate system architecture and technical tradeoffs to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Mentor other engineers through technical interviews and championing engineering best practices.

Requirements

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience (or 10+ years in lieu of a degree).
• Expertise in developing applications with Ruby on Rails.
• Strong experience designing and developing RESTful APIs.
• Proficiency with React, Redux, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship, now or in the future.
• Must be able to successfully obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Public Trust security clearance.

Nice to have

• Prior experience supporting federal government contracts.
• Familiarity with the VA.gov platform and vets-api architecture.
• Experience using Postman, Datadog, and RSpec.
