Lead Applied Scientist (AI)

Location: Illinois, United States; remote/hybrid

Salary: $164,000–$246,000 annual base salary, plus annual performance bonus and long-term incentives.

What you will do

• Set technical direction for the public-sector investigations workstream and sequence applied science initiatives.
• Lead scientific reviews and evaluations without directly managing people.
• Own AI system readiness from problem framing through evaluation, error analysis, efficacy studies, and production monitoring.
• Develop prototypes with tiger teams and carry early initiatives from proof of concept to production at scale.
• Serve as the first escalation point for complex technical decisions and collaborate with engineering, product, design, and embedded legal experts.
• Build retrieval and review systems for FOIA, public-records workflows, and government investigations.

Requirements

• Master’s or PhD in computer science or another quantitative discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
• At least 3 years of professional applied AI/ML experience.
• Eligibility for a US Public Trust clearance.
• Working knowledge of FOIA exemptions, PII handling, redaction, privacy, and records standards.
• Experience specifying, prototyping, deploying, and productionizing AI systems with engineering partners.
• Strong data analysis, software-engineering judgment, communication, stakeholder management, and strategic planning skills.

• Experience with government data or public-records work.
• Interest in legal technology and the justice system.
• Experience developing information retrieval systems or agentic harnesses.
• Experience building reliable AI systems at scale.
