Chief AI Subject Matter Expert (AI)

Location: Hybrid/on-site, requiring at least 3 days per week in office in Arlington, VA; Mount Laurel, NJ; or San Diego, CA. Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain an active Secret U.S. Security Clearance.

Salary: $198,000–$328,000 per year, depending on experience, skills, and education.

What you will do

• Serve as a strategic and technical subject matter expert on AI, generative AI, LLMs, machine learning, and emerging AI capabilities.
• Lead the integration of AI models, services, and components into complex, mission-critical defense software systems.
• Define and evolve AI-augmented engineering standards, patterns, and development practices across engineering teams.
• Develop intelligent data processing and NLP pipelines, as well as AI-enabled dashboards, interfaces, and insights.
• Prototype and evaluate agent frameworks, coding copilots, automated testing agents, and other emerging AI developer tools.
• Mentor engineers and identify software lifecycle activities that can be accelerated through generative AI and automation while maintaining security, reliability, and mission assurance.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
• 15+ years of full-time professional experience.
• Expertise in agent-based development workflows, AI-assisted engineering environments, LLM APIs, RAG architectures, vector databases, model evaluation, and prompt workflows.
• Daily experience using generative AI coding tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Codeium, ChatGPT, Claude, or similar systems.
• Ability to evaluate AI-generated code for correctness, security, and performance and to integrate AI models into production workflows.
• Ability to obtain and maintain an active Secret U.S. Security Clearance and work from the listed U.S. office locations at least 3 days per week.

Nice to have

• Experience with AI-augmented developer tooling, LLM orchestration frameworks, DevSecOps integration, or self-hosted LLMs in secure environments.
• Proficiency with Docker, Podman, Kubernetes, Swarm, virtual machines, or related infrastructure technologies.
• Experience with complex Department of War systems, U.S. Navy or U.S. Army tactical command-and-control or sensor systems.
• Experience collaborating with Program Managers, Chief Engineers, security, compliance, and other cross-functional stakeholders.
