Staff Applied Scientist (Document Vision)

Location: Illinois, United States; remote/hybrid arrangement

Salary: $197,000–$295,000 annually, plus annual performance bonus and long-term incentives

What you will do

• Lead scientific work on multimodal document understanding across aiR.
• Solve complex problems involving scanned pages, photographs, tables, handwriting, stamps, and broken layouts.
• Develop evaluation methods, modeling patterns, and quality standards for reliable AI systems.
• Own flagship AI system readiness from problem framing through efficacy studies and production monitoring.
• Mentor senior and lead scientists through deep technical review.
• Advise Applied Science leadership on scientific direction and investment priorities.

Requirements

• Master’s degree or PhD in computer science or another quantitative discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
• At least 6 years of applied AI/ML experience.
• Experience specifying, shipping, and operating production AI/ML systems at scale.
• Strong judgment in AI system development, measurement, reliability, and limitations.
• Scientific research, data analysis, software engineering, and programming skills, including Python.
• Ability to define evaluations, perform error analysis, and collaborate with engineering teams.

Nice to have

• Production experience with vision-language or document-understanding models, layout analysis, OCR-adjacent pipelines, or table and figure extraction.
• Experience developing information retrieval systems or agentic harnesses.
• Interest in legal technology and the justice system.
• Experience building reliable AI systems at scale.
