Staff Data Scientist, Imaging (AI)

Location: Redwood City, California, United States; hybrid, onsite at least 60% of the working month, approximately 3 days per week

Salary: $214,000–$294,800 base pay per year, plus potential discretionary annual performance bonus

What you will do

• Design data representations and tokenization strategies for biological imaging data and novel model architectures.
• Coordinate Experimental, Data Science, Data Engineering, and AI Research teams to translate biological structures into learnable representations.
• Guide data acquisition priorities, define quality criteria, and assess external datasets from a representation perspective.
• Develop and validate unified training frameworks for heterogeneous biological data modalities.
• Design for robustness to noise, bias, and batch effects across large-scale datasets.
• Evaluate which biological signals are captured or lost by representation choices and iterate to improve model performance.

Requirements

• PhD in computational biology, bioinformatics, or a quantitative biological field.
• Experience with tokenization strategies for non-text data, including images, sequences, graphs, or time series.
• Track record of novel methodological contributions through publications, open-source tools, or production systems.
• Deep understanding of imaging data and transforming raw data into AI-ready datasets.
• Experience designing data representations or features for machine learning in scientific or biological contexts.
• Strong Python and scientific computing skills, with experience working with large-scale datasets and modern ML architectures such as transformers or diffusion models.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with biological foundation models such as ESM, scGPT, or similar systems.
• Experience working directly with experimental scientists, computational scientists, AI researchers, and data engineers.
• Experience mentoring senior individual contributors.
