Quality NVH Engineer - Electric Motors (Automotive)

Location: Troy, Michigan, United States; applicants must already be authorized to work full-time in the United States. Travel up to 25% to customers, warehouses, manufacturing plants, and suppliers may be required.

What you will do

• Analyze field and warranty returns using customer complaints, DTC codes, vehicle information, usage conditions, service history, EOL data, production history, and field data.
• Perform visual, functional, electrical, insulation, connector, and terminal inspections of returned motors.
• Define analysis scope and conduct teardown inspections of drive-unit components, including rotors, stators, windings, magnets, bearings, shafts, sensors, housings, connectors, seals, and cooling paths.
• Investigate electrical, mechanical, insulation, thermal, performance, noise, and vibration failures and determine component-level root causes.
• Coordinate NVH testing with internal teams, suppliers, external laboratories, and specialized test companies.
• Prepare technical reports and customer presentations, communicate findings and corrective actions, and coordinate with plants, engineering teams, suppliers, and laboratories.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related technical field.
• At least 5 years of hands-on experience in quality engineering, field or warranty failure analysis, motor engineering, test engineering, reliability engineering, or automotive electric powertrain fields.
• Knowledge of automotive motor structures, operating principles, and failure modes, including stators, rotors, windings, magnets, bearings, shafts, resolvers, encoders, cooling systems, connectors, and terminals.
• Experience with teardown analysis, electrical and mechanical testing, insulation testing, thermal review, NVH evaluation, and motor measurements such as resistance, inductance, back EMF, insulation resistance, hipot, waveforms, and sensor signals.
• Experience with Root Cause Analysis, 5 Why, Fishbone, Fault Tree Analysis, 8D, and DOE, plus strong Microsoft Office skills for analysis and reporting.
• Must be authorized to work full-time in the United States; visa sponsorship is not available. The role may require lifting and manipulating parts up to 50 lbs. and standing or stooping for extended periods.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree or higher in a relevant engineering discipline.
• Experience with EV, HEV, PHEV, or other electric powertrain motor applications.
• Hands-on experience with dynamometers, EOL testers, insulation and hipot testers, oscilloscopes, vibration analyzers, sound-level meters, power analyzers, thermal cameras, and data acquisition systems.
• Knowledge of APQP, PPAP, FMEA, Control Plan, SPC, MSA, OEM quality processes, and customer-specific requirements.
