Staff Software Engineer, Observability

Location: Menlo Park, California office; in-person attendance expected at least 3 days per week

Base pay range: $230,000–$270,000 USD for Zone 1 locations, $203,000–$238,000 USD for Zone 2, and $180,000–$211,000 USD for Zone 3. Additional bonus, equity, and benefits are available.

What you will do

• Define and execute the full-stack observability roadmap for metrics, logs, traces, and alerting infrastructure.
• Own the observability control plane, including telemetry ingestion pipelines, cost management, and high-availability tooling.
• Lead and collaborate with a team of six engineers building scalable, self-service observability solutions.
• Establish and maintain SLOs that meet or exceed the platform's 99.9% uptime target.
• Partner with the Robinhood Command Center and engineering teams on dependency mapping, incident response, and observability standards.

Requirements

• 8+ years of software engineering experience delivering large-scale observability or infrastructure platform initiatives.
• Deep expertise in Kubernetes and public cloud environments, with AWS preferred.
• Strong coding proficiency in Go, Python, or a similar language.
• Experience integrating observability agents, libraries, and instrumentation into production codebases.
• Experience owning observability control planes or telemetry pipelines, including ingestion cost management, cardinality control, and signal routing.
• Experience with Vector or equivalent high-throughput log and metrics routing tools.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with Prometheus, Grafana, Honeycomb, Humio, or Sentry.
