Staff Software Engineer (Cloud Platform)

TL;DR

Staff Software Engineer (Cloud Platform): Building and optimizing GM’s next-generation cloud platform, Nova, with an accent on Kubernetes-based architecture, control-plane abstractions, and operational reliability. Focus on designing reusable platform capabilities, improving developer experience, and scaling infrastructure services across Azure and GCP.

Location: Hybrid role; must report to Austin, TX, Mountain View, CA, or Warren, MI at least three times per week.

Compensation: $184,100 – $275,450 base salary.

What you will do

• Lead the design and implementation of shared cloud platform capabilities with a focus on Kubernetes.
• Build reusable abstractions and tooling to reduce complexity for internal platform customers.
• Develop operators and controllers to automate platform safety, consistency, and operability.
• Improve monitoring, observability, and deployment patterns for highly reliable services.
• Partner across teams to identify friction and deliver scalable technical solutions.
• Participate in on-call rotations and contribute to incident response and service maintenance.

Requirements

• Must be authorized to work in the US; no immigration sponsorship provided.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
• 8+ years of experience in engineering or architecture roles.
• Strong experience building and operating production systems in cloud environments.
• Deep expertise with Kubernetes and cloud-native platform architecture.
• Proven ability to build operators, controllers, or control-plane abstractions.
• Strong coding, design, and systems thinking skills.

Nice to have

• Experience with Go and/or Java in production platform environments.
• Background in multi-cloud environments (Azure and GCP).
• Deep experience in developer enablement and platform product management.
