Software Engineer (Java/Kotlin)

TL;DR

Software Engineer (Java/Kotlin): Developing and maintaining the software infrastructure for the BioStudies database to support the ingestion and distribution of heterogeneous life sciences data with an accent on backend services and data access web applications. Focus on implementing support for complex datasets including protein-ligand interactions and AI-associated data while ensuring system scalability.

Location: Hinxton, Cambridgeshire (Hybrid). Relocation package available.

What you will do

• Design, develop, and operate software infrastructure for the BioStudies database.
• Build backend components, data access web services, and data submission applications.
• Integrate support for new data types, such as protein-ligand interaction and AI model data.
• Collaborate with EBI IT and technical services teams to ensure seamless data distribution.
• Provide technical support to a global community of scientific users.

Requirements

• At least 5 years of experience with Java or Kotlin and the Spring framework.
• At least 3 years of experience in web application development.
• Proficiency with search engines such as Lucene, Solr, or Elasticsearch.
• Strong knowledge of the UNIX command line.
• Experience with CI/CD, software testing principles, and system monitoring.
• Must be able to work in a hybrid setup in the UK.

Nice to have

• Experience working in multidisciplinary scientific environments.
• Proficiency in Python.
• Experience with Vue.js, React, or Angular.
• Web design experience.
