Security Engineer - Detection Engineering (AI)

What you will do

• Engineer and deploy security controls and detection logic to identify and mitigate cyber threats across Tesco’s technology landscape.
• Build resilient, maintainable, and scalable security solutions using secure coding and test-driven development.
• Apply automation and artificial intelligence to improve detection accuracy, reduce false positives, and optimise response workflows.
• Develop detection and prevention mechanisms for cloud and enterprise environments.
• Collaborate with Security Operations Centre, Threat Intelligence, and platform engineering teams.
• Research emerging threats and use incident learnings to improve detection coverage and engineering practices.

Requirements

• Understanding of software development lifecycles and hands-on experience building production-grade solutions.
• Experience with secure coding and test-driven development in an engineering or security context.
• Practical exposure to security platforms such as SIEM and EDR.
• Ability to design, test, and implement custom detection rules, alerts, and telemetry while reducing noise without compromising visibility.
• Strong critical thinking, curiosity, commitment to professional development, and ability to work in diverse cross-functional teams.
• Ability to work in the hybrid Welwyn Garden City arrangement, with 60% of the week at office locations or local sites.

Nice to have

• Exposure to cloud, container, retail technology, or technical security architecture environments.
• Experience with security evaluation, control testing, and validation.
• Familiarity with applied AI, responsible AI governance, and compliance principles in cyber defence.
• Experience with GitHub, Jira, Zendesk, xMatters, or querying languages such as SPL, KQL, or SQL.
• Knowledge of product methodologies, agile delivery, and security data analytics.
