Senior Director, IP Strategy (Biotech)

Location: Hybrid role based in either Bridgewater, New Jersey, or San Diego, California, with remote work most of the time and in-person collaboration as needed.

Annual salary: $247,000–$337,500.

What you will do

• Lead end-to-end IP strategy for the company’s biologic patent portfolio.
• Draft, file, and prosecute strategic patent applications worldwide, directly and through outside counsel and the internal IP team.
• Coordinate offensive and defensive patent challenges, including European oppositions and appeals, US IPRs and PGRs, and litigation in the US, Europe, and China.
• Drive competitor intelligence, freedom-to-operate analyses, portfolio risk assessments, and identification of whitespace opportunities.
• Advise R&D, business, and executive teams on complex IP matters, due diligence, publication clearance, and business development.
• Manage outside counsel and mentor or directly manage IP team members.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in a life science discipline and J.D. from an accredited US law school.
• Member in good standing of a US State Bar and registered to practice before the USPTO.
• 15+ years of patent experience in the pharmaceutical or biotech sector, including significant in-house experience.
• Expertise in patent strategy for viral gene therapy, protein therapeutics, and antisense oligonucleotide technologies.
• Significant experience with patent disputes, including oppositions, IPRs, PGRs, and/or litigation, plus a strong understanding of global patent systems.
• Superb written and verbal communication skills in English are required.
