Director - Intellectual Property

Location: Hybrid in St. Paul, Minnesota, United States

Salary: $200,000–$220,000 per year

What you will do

• Manage a global patent portfolio, including invention harvesting, drafting, prosecution, optimization, and strategic patent matters.
• Lead trademark portfolio management, brand protection, trademark enforcement, and related due diligence.
• Develop trade secret and confidential information protection programs with Legal, Human Resources, R&D, and Compliance.
• Lead IP due diligence and provide counsel for mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, joint ventures, licenses, and strategic technology agreements.
• Assist the Chief IP Counsel with department leadership, workflows, budgets, metrics, acquired IP integration, and operational initiatives.
• Supervise outside counsel and IP professionals while training and mentoring business leaders, inventors, scientists, engineers, and legal colleagues.

Requirements

• Juris Doctor degree, active membership in at least one U.S. state bar, and registration to practice before the USPTO.
• Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related technical discipline.
• 10–15 years of intellectual property experience in a law firm, corporate legal department, or combination thereof.
• Experience managing patent portfolios and providing strategic IP counseling to business, technology, and innovation organizations.
• Strong writing, communication, stakeholder management, people management, and project management skills.

Nice to have

• In-house intellectual property experience.
• Experience in chemical, adhesives, materials science, construction products, health and hygiene, or medical technology businesses.
• Experience with trademark enforcement, trade secret programs, IP due diligence, technology licensing, and IP disputes.
• Ability to advise senior business leaders and influence strategic decision-making.
