Engineering Manager (AI)

Engineering Manager (AI): Leading the Agent Context team to build search, retrieval, and reasoning systems for Asana's AI agents with an accent on RAG, dense embedding pipelines, and ranking systems. Focus on scaling retrieval to be comprehensive and fast at enterprise scale and building evaluation frameworks to ensure system trustworthiness.

Location: Hybrid in New York City (Standard in-office days: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday)

Salary: $264,000 - $300,000

What you will do

• Own the technical direction and delivery of Asana's retrieval stack, including lexical/semantic search and RAG.
• Build and operate evaluation infrastructure for recall/precision benchmarks and comparative testing.
• Optimize cost, performance, and quality tradeoffs for retrieval systems and downstream LLM calls.
• Define and enforce integration standards for embedding decisions and infrastructure spend.
• Hire and grow a team of senior engineers in NYC, managing across multiple time zones.
• Partner with Product Management to translate a platform thesis into a sequenced roadmap.

Requirements

• 8+ years of software engineering experience with 3+ years managing engineers (including senior level) on infrastructure or ML teams.
• Proven experience shipping and operating production search, retrieval, or ML-serving systems at scale.
• Deep knowledge of inverted indexes, BM25, vector search, embedding models, and hybrid retrieval.
• Experience building evaluation systems for ML/AI quality (golden datasets, LLM-as-judge).
• Ability to provide high-level technical leadership and review complex design documents.
• Strong written communication skills for leading distributed teams across time zones.
