TL;DR

Propulsion CFD Engineer (Aerospace): Conducting computational fluid dynamics analysis of propulsion system components and thruster plumes for a reusable space orbital vehicle with an accent on flow physics, component design, and vehicle-level integration. Focus on performing CFD simulations for valves and injectors, modeling thruster plumes, and validating models against test data.

Location: Bordeaux, France. Relocation assistance and visa sponsorship are provided.

Salary: €50K – €70K

Company

The Exploration Company is developing Nyx, a modular and reusable space orbital vehicle designed for cargo and potential human transport.

What you will do

  • Perform CFD simulations of propulsion components (valves, regulators, injectors) to analyze internal flow and pressure drops.
  • Model thruster plume characterization from near-field continuum expansion to far-field rarefied flow.
  • Assess plume-induced thermal, contamination, and force effects on vehicle surfaces and subsystems.
  • Collaborate with design, structural, and thermal engineers to translate CFD results into actionable design inputs.
  • Validate and correlate CFD models against cold-flow and hot-fire test data.
  • Maintain and improve CFD simulation workflows, meshing practices, and technical documentation.

Requirements

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in aerospace or a related field.
  • 3+ years of hands-on CFD experience in propulsion or fluid dynamics.
  • Proficiency in ANSYS Fluent, STAR-CCM+, OpenFOAM, or equivalent tools.
  • Experience with compressible, multiphase, and/or rarefied gas flows.
  • Fluent English proficiency (C1).
  • Strong foundation in thermodynamics, gas dynamics, and fluid mechanics.

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with plume characterization methods such as DSMC or continuum-rarefied coupling.
  • Scripting skills in Python or MATLAB for meshing and workflow automation.
  • Knowledge of German or French languages.

Culture & Benefits

  • Agile decision-making environment focused on democratising space.
  • Open and collaborative culture with transparency regarding risks and obstacles.
  • Relocation assistance and visa sponsorship available.
  • Opportunity to work on a cutting-edge reusable orbital vehicle in a fast-evolving environment.
