TL;DR

Network Reliability Engineer (Networking/Automation): Own the reliability and performance of Proton’s network infrastructure, with an accent on protocol-level optimization, security controls, and automation tooling. Focus on building and operating telemetry-driven, Kubernetes-controller-based networking with minimal-disruption upgrades and incident response.

Location: Geneva; Paris

Salary: €50,000–€77,000 (Paris)

Company

Proton builds privacy-first communication and security products, including Proton Mail and Proton VPN.

What you will do

  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize network protocols to maximize uptime across the global fleet
  • Deploy and maintain network security controls (firewalls, IDS/IPS, ACLs) aligned with Proton privacy and security standards
  • Build automation tooling in Python, Go, or Rust to reduce manual operations and expose network capabilities as self-service APIs
  • Lead or contribute to network upgrades and migrations (including DC fabric changes) with strict protocol best practices
  • Operate and extend telemetry pipelines and Kubernetes-based network controllers; contribute upstream when beneficial
  • Participate in on-call rotation, respond to high-severity incidents, and drive post-mortems to corrective action

Requirements

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience implementing and operating enterprise-scale networks in production
  • Deep practical knowledge of BGP, OSPF, IS-IS, EVPN VXLAN, and TCP/IP with protocol-first reasoning
  • Experience configuring network security controls (firewalls, IDS/IPS, ACLs) without relying on proprietary features
  • Ability to script confidently in Python, Go, Rust, or equivalent for monitoring and configuration automation
  • Solid Linux and DevOps fundamentals (CLI comfort, Terraform, and Git-based workflows)
  • Hardware-agnostic mindset across multiple vendors

Nice to have

  • Experience building network telemetry pipelines using gNMIc, sFlow, BMP (or similar) integrated with Prometheus and Grafana
  • Kubernetes experience, especially leveraging or adapting controllers
  • Contributions to open-source networking tools or internal automation frameworks
  • Involvement in NOG communities or conference speaking

Culture & Benefits

  • Strong health coverage, retirement options, generous leave, and wellness support
  • Stock options with an ownership mindset
  • Learning and development with real ownership from day one
  • In-person collaboration in offices across Geneva and other locations; most time collaborating face-to-face
  • Lunch and snacks provided in offices
  • Transport support (public transport, bike allowances, or parking) and flexible working hours

Hiring process

  • Interview process to discuss final compensation based on qualifications and experience
  • On-site collaboration expectations aligned with Geneva/Paris office locations
