TL;DR

Lead Backend Engineer (Rust): Building and owning backend services for the Frisbee consumer application with an accent on backend-driven infrastructure, feature gating, and UX configuration. Focus on designing scalable APIs, orchestrating complex business logic, and providing technical leadership across mobile and backend engineering teams.

Location: Must be based in or able to commute to Redwood City, CA (Hybrid: Mondays in-office, plus three additional days per week).

What you will do

• Design and own Rust-based microservices that power the Frisbee consumer experience.
• Manage backend systems responsible for business logic, feature flags, and mobile UX configuration.
• Define and maintain clean APIs and client-server contracts for iOS and Android applications.
• Partner with mobile engineers to ensure fast, predictable delivery and unblock technical challenges.
• Act as the technical owner for major initiatives from initial design through production.
• Provide architectural guidance and code reviews across both backend and mobile codebases.

Requirements

• 6+ years of experience building and owning production backend systems.
• Strong expertise in designing APIs, service boundaries, and data models.
• Experience evolving complex systems using microservice or service-oriented architectures.
• Proficiency operating systems in cloud environments (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
• Experience working closely with mobile engineering teams (iOS/Android).
• Must be able to work in a hybrid capacity in Redwood City, CA.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with backend-driven or configuration-driven client architectures.
• Experience with gRPC, protobuf, or GraphQL.
• Experience with relational databases.
• Exposure to React Native.
• Experience integrating third-party SDKs.
