What you will do

  • Design, build, align, and calibrate optical analytical instruments such as Raman, FTIR, fluorescence, and scattering systems.
  • Develop custom components and fixtures through rapid prototyping and iterative design.
  • Integrate optics with detectors, light sources, motion control, electronics, and fluidics.
  • Execute experiments and analyze data to optimize signal-to-noise ratio, resolution, and stability.
  • Act as the internal subject-matter expert for spectroscopy and system architecture.
  • Maintain technical documentation, BOMs, and support IP filings and hand-off to manufacturing.

Requirements

  • PhD or exceptional MSc in Physics, Optics/Photonics, Nanoscience, or a related engineering field.
  • 3+ years of industry experience designing complex optical systems in a lab environment.
  • Practical expertise in Raman, FTIR, fluorescence, or scattering instrumentation.
  • Strong skills in opto-mechanics, precision alignment, and stray-light control.
  • Proficiency in data acquisition and control using Python, Matlab, C++, or LabVIEW.
  • Must be based in London, UK.

Nice to have

  • Proficiency in optical and mechanical CAD tools like Zemax, OpticStudio, SolidWorks, or Onshape.
  • Experience maturing prototypes toward production (DfX, manufacturability, reliability).
  • Knowledge of fiber optics, micro-optics, microfluidics, or signal processing.
