News Deputy Team Lead

Salary: $105,000-$135,000 per year

What you will do

• Manage assignments and stories from pitch through publication, setting coverage priorities, deadlines, word limits, and reporting resources.
• Direct breaking-news, enterprise, and analysis coverage focused on Capitol Hill topics including tax, transportation, and education.
• Review, evaluate, and edit stories while coordinating graphics, video, photography, and story tagging.
• Coach reporters and editors through constructive feedback on writing and reporting, often under tight deadlines.
• Lead special projects and support change initiatives across the news department.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree.
• At least 5 years of journalism experience.
• Excellent editing, story-management, and news-judgment skills.
• Ability to independently assign stories, prioritize work, and manage daily team coverage.
• Ability to explain complex legal and government actions and develop engaging coverage.
• Experience in management, project management, or team leadership, with knowledge of digital news publishing operations.
