Staff Software Engineer (Backend)

Location: Must be based in the US (Eastern timezone) or able to work from the NYC office.

Salary: $221,250 - $348,500

What you will do

• Evolve the graph-based execution architecture that compiles and runs user notebooks.
• Design and implement parallel execution strategies and caching to reduce latency.
• Instrument complex systems to diagnose performance bottlenecks.
• Collaborate on platform capabilities, including building internal query languages.
• Author technical proposals and mentor engineers on ambitious designs.
• Roadmap long-term technical milestones across quarters.

Requirements

• 10+ years of backend engineering experience with a focus on computation and performance.
• Strong expertise in database/storage optimization and systems architecture.
• Proven track record of solving large-scale systems design problems.
• Must be based in the US (specifically the Eastern timezone for remote work).
• Proficiency in Python and/or TypeScript.
• Ability to lead technical work and collaborate effectively in a remote-first environment.

Nice to have

• Working knowledge of Kubernetes, Docker, and cloud infrastructure.
• Willingness to occasionally contribute to frontend features.
