Principal Software Engineer (Embedded Linux)

TL;DR

Principal Software Engineer (Embedded Linux): Leading the technical architecture and development of next-generation automotive computing platforms with an accent on embedded Linux, BSP integration, and system-level connectivity. Location: On-site in Austin, TX (5 days per week). No relocation benefits provided.

What you will do

• Define and drive technical architecture for embedded Linux platforms, including kernel, boot, and platform services.
• Lead Yocto/OpenEmbedded-based development, BSP architecture, and CI/CD workflows to improve reuse and delivery speed.
• Drive system bring-up for new hardware, including bootloader configuration and low-level debugging.
• Integrate and optimize hardware components such as Ethernet, PCIe, and radio subsystems within the software stack.
• Define diagnostics, health monitoring, and fault management strategies to ensure system reliability.
• Mentor engineers and establish technical standards for maintainability and performance.

Requirements

• Must be authorized to work in the US; GM does not provide immigration sponsorship.
• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science.
• 10+ years of experience in embedded Linux, firmware, or platform software development.
• Deep expertise in kernel/driver development, Yocto/OpenEmbedded, and BSP architecture.
• Strong experience with bootloaders (U-Boot) and low-level debugging tools (JTAG, GDB, oscilloscopes).
• Proven ability to lead technical architecture and mentor engineering teams.
