TL;DR

Lead Material Artist (Gamedev): Defining and driving material systems for an ambitious interactive project set in a contemporary urban environment with an accent on quality, consistency, and scalability across characters or environments. Focus on establishing scalable workflows, shader standards, and material libraries for production across high-end platforms and mobile.

Location: Must be based in Montreal and work from the office a minimum of 4 days a week. Must be legally authorized to work in Canada.

What you will do

  • Translate art direction into high-quality materials meeting both visual and technical requirements.
  • Lead and mentor a team of material artists to ensure consistency, quality, and scalability.
  • Define, maintain, and evolve material pipelines, workflows, and shader standards.
  • Oversee creation of materials for either the character track (skin, fabric, wardrobe) or the world track (environments, props, tiling systems).
  • Collaborate with Character, Environment, Tech Art, and Lighting teams for proper integration into rendering and runtime systems.
  • Identify and optimize pipelines to support efficient production across platforms from high-end to mobile.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience in game development with a focus on material creation.
  • Extensive experience in AAA production environments.
  • Proven experience leading and managing a team of artists on at least one shipped title.
  • Deep understanding of PBR workflows and shader-based material systems.
  • Experience with modern game engines, specifically Unreal Engine.
  • Legal authorization to work in Canada.

Nice to have

  • Experience with Unreal Engine 5 and advanced shader workflows.
  • Familiarity with modular assets, customization systems, or procedural workflows.
  • Experience working with outsourcing partners or distributed teams.
  • Strong eye for realism, material definition, and visual consistency.
