Java Backend Engineering Lead (Java)

Location: Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain; hybrid work with commuting to the Barcelona office a couple of times a week if needed

Salary: €85,000–€90,000 annually

What you will do

• Define and drive the backend vision, architecture, design systems, tooling, and engineering standards across teams.
• Lead backend engineers through coaching, mentoring, performance check-ins, training, hiring, onboarding, and development support.
• Build a strong backend engineering community through knowledge sharing, guilds, and consistent ways of working.
• Ensure predictable, scalable, and high-quality backend delivery while identifying systemic delivery and quality risks.
• Align backend work with frontend, data, platform, product, and engineering leadership constraints and priorities.
• Provide hands-on technical leadership through selective pull request reviews, architectural guidance, and contributions to critical backend areas.

Requirements

• Strong experience with the Java stack, including Spring Boot and Liquibase.
• Experience leading backend initiatives across multiple teams and defining architecture adopted at scale.
• Experience mentoring senior engineers and influencing technical direction.
• Strong understanding of Java and PostgreSQL performance, database modeling, and risk analysis.
• Experience working with cross-functional stakeholders.
• EU citizenship or an EU work permit is required, with openness to relocating to Spain if currently based elsewhere.
