Director of Engineering (Fintech): Building and scaling a best-in-class cash delivery platform to distribute billions of dollars to people in extreme poverty with an accent on engineering culture and technical strategy. Focus on scaling a greenfield platform, integrating with mobile money rails, and designing an organization for rapid growth.
Location: Remote. Must overlap with East Africa Time by at least 3 hours. (Note: Unable to sponsor employment visas in the US or UK).
Compensation: Base $200,000, Total Target $230,000+ (for US-based candidates).

What you will do
- Lead the engineering organization for the cash delivery platform, managing structure, staffing, and operating models.
- Define the multi-year technical strategy, including architectural transitions and build-vs-buy decisions.
- Protect and scale a high-performance engineering culture focused on open debate and product ownership.
- Drive operational excellence across on-call, incident response, code quality, and AI adoption.
- Partner with senior leadership to translate technical realities into business decisions and product roadmaps.
- Coach and develop engineers through 1:1s, career planning, and performance management.
Requirements
- Must overlap with East Africa Time by at least 3 hours.
- 5+ years of experience managing engineers, including leading multiple teams through full delivery cycles.
- 10+ years of industry experience building production software with a strong backend foundation (databases, cloud services, APIs).
- Proven track record of recruiting and retaining talent-dense, inclusive teams during high-growth periods.
- Strong technical judgment and ability to pressure-test architecture decisions.
- Experience partnering with non-technical stakeholders to build product-development fluency.
