Automation Engineer (Industrial Automation)

Location: Onsite in Blacksburg, Virginia, United States. The position requires access to U.S. export-controlled information.

Salary: $90,000–$125,000 annually, plus potential bonuses and other compensation.

What you will do

• Develop detailed equipment specifications covering functional requirements, integration methods, and safety features.
• Evaluate vendor proposals, oversee factory and site acceptance testing, and manage equipment commissioning.
• Lead industrial automation projects from concept through deployment, including scope, timelines, stakeholder communication, and post-deployment support.
• Integrate automation equipment with plant networks, MES, ERP, and data systems in partnership with IT.
• Coordinate with Safety, Facilities, Industrial Engineering, and Manufacturing Operations to ensure compliant, reliable, and production-ready deployments.
• Troubleshoot technical issues, provide system training, and maintain equipment and project documentation.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Automation, Electrical, Mechanical, Industrial Engineering, or a related field, plus five years of related experience.
• Professional experience in industrial automation, equipment specification, and manufacturing project delivery.
• Knowledge of PLC, HMI, and robotics control systems and their integration with IT systems.
• Strong project management, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
• Ability to work onsite in Blacksburg, Virginia, and meet applicable U.S. export-control access requirements.

Nice to have

• Experience with business process automation, workflow automation, or ERP/MES enhancements.
• Familiarity with low-code/no-code platforms and BPA best practices.
