Automation Engineer

What you will do

• Create comprehensive equipment and automation specifications, including functional requirements, integration methods, and safety features.
• Evaluate vendor proposals and oversee FAT/SAT testing, commissioning, and deployment readiness.
• Integrate automation equipment with plant networks and enterprise systems (MES, ERP, and data systems) in partnership with IT.
• Coordinate with Safety, Facilities, Industrial Engineering, and Manufacturing Operations to align automation with compliance, infrastructure, and production goals.
• Lead automation initiatives from concept through commissioning, including scope, timelines, and stakeholder communication.
• Troubleshoot technical issues after deployment and provide training and documentation for systems and equipment.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Automation, Electrical, Mechanical, Industrial Engineering, or related field with five (5) years related experience.
• Proven experience in industrial automation, equipment specification, and manufacturing project delivery.
• Knowledge of control systems (PLC, HMI, robotics) and integration with IT systems.
• Strong project management, communication, and collaboration skills.
• Onsite work in Blacksburg, VA.

Nice to have

• Experience with business process automation (BPA) and workflow streamlining using digital tools.
• Familiarity with low-code/no-code platforms and BPA best practices.
