Program Manager, Communications Strategy & Operations (AI)

Location: San Francisco, CA or New York City, NY; hybrid policy requires working from one of the offices at least 25% of the time

Annual salary: $265,000–$295,000 USD

What you will do

• Run the operating rhythm for major communications campaigns, including planning, prioritization, status reporting, and retrospectives.
• Turn ambiguous, fast-changing projects into clear workstreams, owners, timelines, and decision points.
• Advise communications leadership by surfacing risks, tradeoffs, and recommendations and driving decisions under pressure.
• Build alignment and accountability across Product, Marketing, Policy, Legal, Research, and executive teams.
• Anticipate and resolve operational bottlenecks during high-visibility programs and compressed timelines.
• Design and improve playbooks, crisis response protocols, escalation paths, and cross-team coordination models.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience in program management, communications operations, or a closely related discipline.
• Significant experience working in or alongside communications teams, including campaign, media, and crisis response operations.
• Experience leading complex, high-visibility programs under pressure and influencing senior stakeholders without formal authority.
• Strong organizational, strategic thinking, follow-through, and executive communication skills.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Commitment to the safe development of transformative AI systems.

Nice to have

• In-house communications or agency experience at a high-growth technology company.
• Direct experience supporting crisis communications or rapid-response efforts.
• Experience building program management or operations functions from scratch.
• Familiarity with the AI landscape and issues shaping public discussion about AI.
