Payroll Team Leader

Location: Remote, United Kingdom

Salary: £34,000–£38,000 per year

What you will do

• Manage a portfolio of customers and process end-to-end payroll accurately.
• Prepare payroll reports, journals, third-party returns, and pension returns.
• Handle high payslip volumes, competing demands, service standards, and KPIs.
• Support team members through coaching, mentoring, one-to-ones, training, and induction.
• Update payroll systems with payscales, allowances, pension deductions, National Insurance rates, and tax thresholds.
• Calculate pay adjustments, holiday pay for leavers, and resolve complex payroll queries.

Requirements

• Proven payroll experience in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong understanding of local government pay and conditions.
• Excellent time management, prioritization, attention to detail, and professional judgment.
• Understanding of HR policies and procedures, including when to escalate concerns.
• Demonstrable customer service, communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
• Commercial outlook and resilience when supporting customers with challenging payroll situations.
