Regional Research Economist (AI)

Location: London, UK; hybrid policy requires staff to be in one of the offices at least 25% of the time. Visa sponsorship is available, subject to role and candidate eligibility.

Annual salary: £195,000–£245,000 GBP.

What you will do

• Build and maintain relationships with academic institutions, policy think tanks, governments, industry, and civil society across the region.
• Lead regional research collaborations on AI’s economic effects and contribute to country- and region-specific economic impact studies.
• Develop and expand the Anthropic Economic Index, including new methodologies for measuring AI usage, diffusion, and impact.
• Design research on labor markets, the future of work, productivity, task transformation, inequality, displacement, industry disruption, and macroeconomic trajectories.
• Work cross-functionally with technical teams to improve measurement infrastructure and data collection.
• Translate research into policy recommendations, publications, policy briefs, and presentations for diverse stakeholders.

Requirements

• PhD in Economics. A bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience is also listed in the logistics requirements.
• Strong empirical research track record, particularly combining novel data sources with economic theory or applying frontier causal inference and machine learning methods.
• Demonstrated experience working in and relevant relationships across the region.
• Experience relevant to AI’s economic impact, including labor market analysis, occupational change, task-based technological transformation, large-scale data analysis, econometrics, large language models for social science research, policy-relevant economics, experimental and quasi-experimental causal inference, macroeconomic modeling, time series forecasting, agent-based modeling, or large-scale simulation.
• Proficiency in Python, R, SQL, or similar tools for large-scale data analysis; experience with novel datasets and measurement systems; and comfort learning new technical tools and frameworks.
• Ability to lead complex research projects from conception to publication, communicate technical findings to diverse audiences, and build relationships across academic, policy, and industry communities.
• Strong interest in ensuring AI development benefits humanity, plus comfort working with AI systems and critically assessing their capabilities and limitations.
• Required field of study: a field relevant to the role, demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience. Required years of experience correlate with internal job-level requirements.
