Senior Software Engineer (Graph Engine): Building a query engine for REDAPL, Datadog's Referential Data Platform, which tracks infrastructure resources and relationships at more than 4.5 million updates per second, with an accent on data ingestion, processing, query pipelines, and distributed systems. Focus on designing efficient relationship traversals, driving scalable and resilient platform architecture, and solving high-scale performance and operability challenges.
Location: Remote from France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, or the United Kingdom only

What you will do
- Build a query engine supporting efficient relationship traversals for demanding workloads.
- Design and deliver high-priority platform projects that improve value, resilience, and scalability across teams.
- Lead engineers through architectural decisions for the REDAPL platform.
- Identify reliability and system risks and design solutions to address them.
- Contribute to engineering initiative prioritization, planning, and roadmaps.
- Collaborate with product teams on requirements and platform growth.
Requirements
- Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related scientific field, or equivalent experience.
- Extensive experience with multiple types of data stores.
- Several years of experience in platform- or infrastructure-focused environments.
- Experience leading technical initiatives focused on performance, cost efficiency, usability, resilience, and operability.
- Significant backend engineering experience building and operating distributed systems at high scale.
- Must work remotely from one of the listed countries: France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, or the United Kingdom.
Nice to have
- Experience with graph databases such as Neo4j, Memgraph, JanusGraph, ArangoDB, Amazon Neptune, or PuppyGraph.
- Production experience with Apache Iceberg.
- Experience with query planning or production query engines such as Trino, Calcite, Substrait, or DataFusion.
- Open-source contributions or PMC membership on relevant projects.
