TL;DR

Senior Engineer (Backend): Building and optimizing the foundational data layer for activity uploads and storage with an accent on distributed systems and high-throughput data pipelines. Focus on designing scalable backend services, managing production infrastructure, and enabling platform capabilities for product teams.

Location: Hybrid (San Francisco, CA). Must be on-site at least three days per week.

Salary: $198,000 – $235,000 + Equity

What you will do

• Own and evolve systems powering activity data from upload ingestion through processing and storage.
• Design and build backend services and data pipelines capable of handling millions of activity uploads.
• Operate and improve critical production infrastructure, including participation in a 24/7 on-call rotation.
• Partner with product teams to scope and deliver platform capabilities that unblock their roadmaps.
• Contribute to technical design reviews and help set the overall technical direction for the team.
• Balance effort between proactive platform investment and direct product-team support.

Requirements

• 4+ years of professional software development experience.
• Track record of writing production-ready software with a focus on monitoring and operational health.
• Significant experience building and operating backend services in production.
• Experience with distributed systems and the trade-offs involved in scaling them.
• Hands-on experience with SQL or column stores.
• Proficiency in Ruby, Scala, Go, or Java, and experience with Kafka, Kubernetes, Docker, and AWS.
