Backend Engineer (Python)

Location: London, United Kingdom. Hybrid working is required, with office attendance on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from January 2027; some teams may require additional office days. Work from abroad is available for up to 3 months per year.

What you will do

• Provide technical leadership on projects, define systems, build proof of concepts, and collaborate with Product and clients.
• Develop backend services and web application systems using APIs, data processing, routing, and automation mechanisms.
• Lead delivery as an individual contributor, conduct code reviews, and mentor junior developers.
• Research and evaluate technologies for new features and products, while improving, refactoring, automating, and documenting the codebase.
• Collaborate with financial, legal, editorial, product, and engineering specialists to deliver complex platform capabilities.
• Support fast development cycles through automated preview environments, feature flags, and maintained non-production environments.

Requirements

• Experience with Python and web frameworks, particularly Flask; familiarity with or ability to adopt FastAPI and typing.
• Strong experience delivering APIs and service-oriented architecture.
• Good working knowledge of SQL and relational databases, especially PostgreSQL.
• Ability to plan and reason about software architecture, data flow, persistent storage, and API endpoints.
• Experience writing testable, maintainable code and participating in code reviews.
• Strong collaboration and communication skills with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
