Mechanical Engineer Intern (Swarm Systems)

TL;DR

Mechanical Engineer Intern (Swarm Systems): Hands-on design and prototyping of mechanical components for drone swarms with an accent on CAD modeling in SolidWorks, 3D printing, and integration testing. Focus on developing ruggedized enclosures, brackets, attachments, and packaging for real-time collaborative autonomy in air, surface, undersea, and ground vehicles.

Location: U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residence required (ITAR/EAR restrictions, no sponsorship). Onsite in facilities with up to 25% travel, physical demands including lifting 25 lbs, PPE, and exposure to industrial conditions.

What you will do

• Create and revise CAD models in SolidWorks for enclosures, brackets, and drone attachments
• Operate FDM 3D printers, prepare prototypes for fit checks and bench testing
• Support senior engineers with builds, drawings, BOMs, and basic testing
• Work on structured projects and ad-hoc tasks for swarm system hardware
• Participate in field tests seeing prototypes on real drone swarms

Requirements

• U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident (ITAR/EAR compliance, E-Verify)
• Currently enrolled in Mechanical Engineering degree (B.S. or M.S. in progress)
• Proficiency in SolidWorks from coursework, projects, or experience
• Ability to walk, stand, lift 25 lbs, use PPE, and handle industrial conditions
• Comfort with occasional off-hours work and up to 25% travel

Nice to have

• Experience with FDM/resin 3D printing and materials (PLA, PETG, ABS, TPU, Nylon)
• Hands-on fabrication (CNC, laser cutting, tools)
• UAV building/flying/modifying experience
• Robotics mechanisms, GD&T, FEA, CFD coursework
• Basic electronics, battery handling, MATLAB
• Team leadership, technical writing skills
