TL;DR

Sr Mechanical Engineer (Capital Equipment Design): Designing and developing advanced, automated clean room manufacturing equipment for diffractive optics in smart glasses with an accent on precision mechanics, robotics, and micron-level accuracy. Focus on integrating machine vision systems, optimizing machine frames, and creating robust solutions for high-stakes wearable technology production.

Location: Fully onsite in Austin, TX. Relocation assistance is available for non-local candidates.

What you will do

  • Design and integrate precision mechanical systems, including robotics, linear motors, and air bearings, to achieve micron-level accuracy.
  • Develop machine vision integration, pneumatic actuators, and electrical panels for automated process equipment.
  • Lead the mechanical design of dispensing and curing systems, optical positioners, and metrology tools for clean room environments.
  • Perform design analysis, FEA simulations, and bench-top prototyping to validate equipment functionality.
  • Optimize machine frames and precision mechanisms for stability and repeatability.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with electrical and software teams and coordinate with OEMs and contract manufacturers.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional experience in mechanical design for precision manufacturing equipment or automation systems.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Proven expertise in designing systems with micron-level precision (stages, actuators, or optical alignment tools).
  • Hands-on experience with CAD software (CREO preferred).
  • Knowledge of clean room standards and manufacturing processes like dispensing and curing.
  • Ability to conduct design analysis, including FEA and tolerance stack-ups.

Nice to have

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Experience with machine vision cameras or optical systems in precision applications.
  • Familiarity with air bearings or advanced constraint design principles.
  • Proficiency in simulation tools like ANSYS or MATLAB for mechanical optimization.
