Sensor Hardware Functional Safety Engineer (Automotive)

Location: Hybrid role based in Foster City, California, United States

Salary: $226,000–$271,000 per year base salary, plus potential RSUs, stock appreciation rights, and sign-on bonus.

What you will do

• Bridge hardware-level functional safety and system-level sensor safety for cameras, LiDAR, and radar.
• Evaluate supplier documentation for imagers, microprocessors, and SoCs, including SEooC and AoU alignment.
• Assess vendor deliverables for ASIL compliance, firmware and software maturity, and diagnostic systems.
• Execute board-level FMEDA for integrated circuits such as FPGAs and microcontrollers.
• Collaborate with Software, Firmware, and Electrical Engineering teams on diagnostic monitoring requirements.
• Support simulation and physical test protocols for SOTIF edge-case scenarios.

Requirements

• B.S. degree in Automotive, Robotics, Aerospace, or Electrical Engineering.
• At least 3 years of professional experience in board bring-up, silicon validation, or hardware design.
• Understanding of SOTIF and ISO 26262 safety protocols.
• Strong interpersonal and professional communication skills in a collaborative environment.
• Ability to work in a hybrid arrangement based in Foster City, California.

Nice to have

• ISO 26262 professional certification such as CFSP or CFSE.
• Automotive-grade hardware validation and design experience.
• Experience with traceability platforms such as JAMA or Polarion.
• Familiarity with IEC 61508, DO-254, and DO-178C.
