Principal Data Engineer

TL;DR

Principal Data Engineer (AI/Data Platforms): Own technical direction and execution of data engineering platform underpinning AI products for data centers with an accent on ingestion pipelines, transformation frameworks, data models, and orchestration. Focus on architecting scalable data systems, defining multi-quarter roadmaps, leading reviews, and ensuring production reliability with clear SLAs.

Location: Remote from anywhere in the United States.

Salary: $170,000–$210,000 base compensation depending on experience plus stock options.

What you will do

• Architect and contribute to core platform components including ingestion pipelines, transformation frameworks, data models, and orchestration
• Define and evolve multi-quarter technical roadmap balancing new capabilities, reliability, and technical debt
• Drive tooling evaluation and adoption across the stack
• Lead architecture reviews, design discussions, and cut through ambiguity on data quality and dependencies
• Translate product requirements into engineering tasks and partner with data science and cross-functional teams
• Mentor engineers, set engineering best practices, and ensure reliable production data systems

Requirements

• At least 8 years in data engineering, 2+ years at principal/staff level
• Proven end-to-end data platform design across ingestion, transformation, storage, serving
• Deep data pipeline design fluency in batch and streaming at scale
• Strong data modeling, storage strategies, software engineering fundamentals
• Strong cloud data infrastructure experience (AWS, GCP, or Azure)
• Demonstrated technical leadership and growing engineers

Nice to have

• Streaming architectures (Spark Structured Streaming, Delta Live Tables, Kafka)
• Data quality/observability tooling (Great Expectations, Monte Carlo, Soda)
• Visualization tools with Databricks (Databricks Dashboards, Tableau, Sigma, Power BI)
• Data collection from edge devices
• Supporting ML workflows (feature engineering, feature stores, model prep)
