TL;DR

Warren, Michigan. Role is onsite at GM’s Battery Cell Development Center (BCDC) at the GM Global Technical Center; requires regular on-site presence. Occasional travel to production plants, suppliers, and labs. Eligible for relocation benefits.

What you will do

  • Own process quality for formation through end-of-line testing, including automated material movements.
  • Define critical quality characteristics like charge/discharge profiles, gas evolution, capacity, impedance, and voltage decay.
  • Support DOE to develop formation and aging recipes; integrate CT and scanning into EOL quality control.
  • Lead data-driven monitoring for EOL testing and cell cycling; validate vision systems.
  • Develop quality documentation (control plans, FMEA, sampling plans) and execute MSA studies.
  • Lead root cause analysis for issues; provide technical leadership on formation chemistry and materials.
  • Support new cell builds, equipment designs, and material introductions grounded in electrochemistry.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or related.
  • 5+ years in battery manufacturing or pack design, focusing on formation and EOL quality.
  • Hands-on experience in cell production with formation, aging, EOL testing.
  • Deep knowledge of lithium-ion electrochemistry (SEI/CEI, interfaces, degradation).
  • Experience with EOL vision systems, automated movements, battery cycling equipment.
  • CT scanning/SEM; quality tools (DOE, SPC, MSA, FMEA).
  • Technical leadership, problem-solving, communication of complex concepts.

  • Advanced degree in electrochemistry or materials science.
  • Integrating formation/aging data with CT/spectroscopy.
  • Gigafactory-scale systems for cycling/test data.
  • Implementing new quality systems in pilot environments.
  • Advanced analytics (ML on cycling/CT data).
