Motorsports Performance Engineer (IndyCar)

TL;DR

Motorsports Performance Engineer (IndyCar): Developing and implementing motorsports analysis tools to improve on-track vehicle performance with an accent on vehicle dynamics, simulation, and data analytics. Focus on correlating vehicle models with track data and optimizing vehicle configurations for IndyCar race teams.

Location: Hybrid (Concord, NC). Must report to Concord, NC at least three times per week.

What you will do

• Utilize vehicle simulation tools, including Driver in Loop (DiL), to derive favorable vehicle configuration and setup recommendations.
• Correlate vehicle models by comparing logged track data with model output to refine performance and handling metrics.
• Analyze series-provided telemetry and timing data to characterize competitor performance and identify trends.
• Develop and distribute performance insights and technical reports to GM IndyCar teams.
• Provide engineering support for rig and track tests, including developing test plans and performing data analysis.
• Collaborate with internal simulation groups and external race team partners to advance analysis methodologies.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or related subjects.
• Experience with automotive projects, vehicle performance, or amateur motorsports (e.g., Formula SAE).
• Basic understanding of vehicle dynamics and vehicle performance.
• Proficiency in programming with Python, MATLAB, or similar languages.
• Demonstrated experience using simulation tools to optimize vehicle performance.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule for live race events and travel up to 25%.

Nice to have

• Software development experience with C#, WPF, or similar languages.
• Engineering experience in USF2000, IndyNXT, LMP3, GT4, CARS Tour, or ASA.
• Proficiency in motorsports data analysis software such as Pi Toolbox, Atlas, or Motec.
