TL;DR

Sr Counsel, Product (Fintech): Providing strategic legal guidance for payroll and employee-centric products with an accent on regulatory compliance, employment law, and money movement. Focus on translating complex financial and employment laws into scalable product solutions while mitigating regulatory risk.

Location: Must be based in Mountain View, CA (Hybrid: minimum 2 days per week in office)

Salary: $215,000 – $275,000 + equity

What you will do

• Lead product legal strategy for payroll and job applicant-related features from design through launch.
• Advise on wage and hour compliance (federal, state, local) and employee classification.
• Provide legal guidance on payments and money movement, including ACH and relationships with financial partners.
• Partner with product teams to identify regulatory risks and develop compliant, scalable solutions.
• Support regulatory examinations, audits, and legal inquiries regarding payroll product design.
• Collaborate with compliance and risk teams to enhance internal governance frameworks.

Requirements

• Juris Doctor degree and active U.S. law license in good standing.
• 4+ years of legal experience supporting payroll servicing businesses, workforce platforms, or fintech.
• Deep knowledge of FLSA and state employment/wage-and-hour laws.
• Proficiency with AI tools and technologies for legal workflows.
• Must be able to work from Mountain View, CA office at least two days per week.

Nice to have

• Experience with SAS-aligned controls and regulatory examinations.
• Knowledge of NACHA and Debit Card network regulations.
• Experience in a high-growth or startup environment.
• Experience in government relations, bankruptcy, or immigration law.
