TL;DR
Software Engineer, Backend Architect (Fintech): Designing and implementing high-level architecture, shared engineering mechanisms, and internal developer services across Mercari's microservice ecosystem with an accent on backend standardization, security, scalability, and cross-organizational problem solving. Focus on analyzing trade-offs across more than 400 microservices, addressing governance and compliance requirements, and improving developer productivity through platform-oriented solutions.
Location: Hybrid, Minato City, Tokyo, Japan; office in Roppongi

What you will do
- Design high-level architecture and create, implement, and share engineering guidelines and best practices.
- Lead backend technology standardization and develop shared mechanisms across the organization.
- Investigate technical issues, propose solutions, implement them, and support their adoption.
- Review detailed designs with Tech Leads and Product Managers to promote consistent architecture across teams.
- Develop and deploy services for internal developers in collaboration with SRE, Platform, and other cross-organizational teams.
- Address architectural challenges across more than 400 microservices managed by over 50 teams.
Requirements
- Experience developing and operating systems in backend or infrastructure technology domains.
- Experience designing data models with RDBMS and NoSQL databases.
- Experience applying knowledge of TCP/IP, HTTP, and other network protocols.
- Experience identifying and resolving technical problems, including performance degradation and cross-organizational issues.
- English at Intermediate level (CEFR B1) and Japanese at Proficient level (CEFR B2) are required.
Nice to have
- Experience with Go, GCP or AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, and microservice architecture.
- Experience designing secure systems using authentication and authorization.
- Experience with DesignDoc, ADR, internal managed services, SDKs, or OSS development.
- Ability to improve organizational productivity and develop services with operational costs in mind.
