Senior Safety Design Software Architect (AV): Lead safety analyses and create runtime safety requirements for AV software stack components with an accent on ensuring alignment with system-level safety and adherence to functional safety standards. Focus on collaborating with engineers and suppliers to verify safe software implementation, resolve safety issues, and improve development processes.
Location: Hybrid in Mountain View/Sunnyvale, California or Warren, Michigan - expected to report to office at least 3 days/week. Travel <25%. Eligible for relocation benefits.

What you will do
- Conduct software safety analyses and create runtime safety requirements in collaboration with GM engineers and suppliers.
- Ensure software safety requirements are complete, consistent, and aligned to system-level requirements.
- Support software teams in design, implementation, and testing to meet safety requirements.
- Enforce adherence to GM’s safety and software development processes and escalate unresolved issues.
- Lead initiatives for continuous improvement of safety and development processes.
- Interface with experts to stay current on safety methods and tools.
Requirements
- 5+ years embedded systems development in safety-critical domains (automotive, aerospace, medical, nuclear)
- Bachelor’s in engineering (Software, Computer, Control, Mechatronics), Computer Science or related.
- Understanding of embedded software details and system-level picture.
- Linux or QNX experience.
- Familiarity with ISO 26262 and other safety standards (IEC 61508, IEC 62304, DO-178C).
- Full software lifecycle experience (requirements, design, coding, verification).
- Proficiency in C/C++ embedded programming.
- Excellent communication; ability to work independently and in teams globally.
Nice to have
- Advanced degrees.
- Experience with safety analysis (HAZOP, FMEA, FTA, STPA).
- Software architecture and design patterns knowledge.
- Multi-core and RTOS experience.
- Familiarity with automotive/active safety systems and in-vehicle networks (CAN, FlexRay, LIN, Ethernet).
