TL;DR
Avionics Architect (Space/Electrical Engineering): Leading the system architecture for next-generation satellite avionics platforms with an accent on high-speed networking, OBC, and GNC interfaces. Focus on designing robust FDIR systems, optimizing high-speed digital interconnects, and ensuring radiation tolerance for space-based assets.
Location: Hybrid in Toronto, Ontario. Relocation packages available for approved roles.
Company
provides real-time Internet access for space-based assets via the first commercial optical data relay constellation.
What you will do
- Lead end-to-end avionics architecture, including system decomposition and interface strategy across OBC and payloads.
- Define architectures for high-speed networking payloads (up to 100G), backplanes, and system boot/recovery concepts.
- Design robust Failure Detection, Isolation, and Recovery (FDIR), including safe-mode behavior and watchdog strategies.
- Document and maintain the technical baseline, including architecture diagrams and design justifications.
- Perform engineering analyses on radiation tolerance, EMI/EMC, signal integrity, and power distribution.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with networking, GNC, RF, software, FPGA, and mechanical teams.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
- 10+ years of experience in spacecraft avionics, high-speed digital electronics, or complex embedded hardware systems.
- Proven experience architecting distributed systems combining processors, FPGAs/SoCs, and high-speed interfaces.
- Strong background in high-speed networking architecture, specifically Ethernet switching/routing up to 100G.
- Deep understanding of FDIR, boot architecture, and firmware update/recovery concepts.
- Experience conducting FMECA/FMEA, worst-case analysis, and radiation effects mitigation.
Nice to have
- Experience in aerospace or high-reliability (high-rel) environments.
- Experience designing hardware for radiation environments.
- Proficiency with Altium for low-level electrical design and high-speed layout.
- Familiarity with space standards such as NASA or ECSS.
- Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering.
