TL;DR

Research Operations Manager (AI): Building and owning the operational infrastructure for a frontier AI research organization with an accent on technical program management, contractor networks, and product strategy. Focus on coordinating complex research pushes, optimizing researcher efficiency, and translating research directions into product strategy.

Location: Hybrid (San Francisco, CA or New York City, NY). All staff are expected to be in the office at least 25% of the time.

Salary: $210,000 - $310,000 USD

What you will do

• Build and manage custom expert contractor networks for evaluation and training data work.
• Lead research partnerships with external partners from scoping through delivery.
• Provide end-to-end TPM support for major research pushes, coordinating across teams and tracking dependencies.
• Translate research directions into product strategy and ensure production environments reflect best configurations.
• Coordinate external communications, including supporting blog posts and public-facing materials.
• Manage team logistics, including onboarding coordination, team events, and operational efficiency programs.

Requirements

• Experience in research operations, technical program management (TPM), or similar roles in fast-moving technical environments.
• Technical background in software development, machine learning, or biology R&D.
• Proven track record of building systems and processes from scratch.
• Experience managing external partners and contractors, including scoping and quality tracking.
• Strong written communication skills.
• Must be based in or able to work from the San Francisco or New York City offices.

Nice to have

• Direct experience sourcing and managing expert contractor networks in technical or scientific domains.
• Familiarity with ML research workflows, such as training runs, evaluations, and data pipelines.
• Experience contributing to product development or product strategy.
