TL;DR
Control Systems & Algorithm Engineering Co-op (Embedded): Developing real-time optimization and control algorithms for smart household appliances with an accent on thermal, fluidic, and electromechanical subsystems. Focus on designing, prototyping, and validating control solutions using classical control methods and embedded C/C++ programming.
Location: Must be based in Needham, MA (5 days per week onsite). No relocation or housing assistance provided.
Salary: $30 - $40 USD per hour.

What you will do
- Design and implement real-time control algorithms for appliance subsystems including thermal, fluidic, and electromechanical components.
- Work hands-on with hardware such as pumps, heaters, boilers, and motors.
- Interface with sensors and implement signal processing, filtering, and estimation techniques.
- Apply classical control methods like PID design and frequency response analysis to ensure system stability.
- Build and iterate prototypes and test rigs to validate algorithms in real hardware environments.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to bring control algorithms from concept to embedded deployment.
Requirements
- Must be a current student in their third year or beyond of a bachelor's program, or enrolled in a master’s/doctorate program.
- Must be able to work 40 hours per week, 5 days per week onsite in Needham, MA.
- Strong understanding of control system theory, including PID design, frequency response, and stability margins.
- Proficiency in embedded C/C++ programming and experience with microcontrollers.
- Hands-on experience working with hardware systems, sensors, and actuators.
- Effective communication skills with the ability to translate abstract concepts into physical product definitions.
Nice to have
- Experience with MATLAB/Simulink for system modeling and model-based design.
- Background in system identification or machine-learning-based modeling.
- Knowledge of nonlinear optimization algorithms for low-compute environments.
- Familiarity with TinyML, CMSIS libraries, or embedded ML frameworks.
