TL;DR
LIT Peer Mentor (Education): Supporting the academic and social-emotional growth of newcomer immigrant youth in the Newcomer Youth Summer Academy with an accent on classroom management, student supervision, and positive role modeling. Focus on navigating cultural differences, assisting with lesson delivery, and fostering an inclusive, trauma-informed learning environment for students aged 5-21.
Location: Must be based in New York City and able to work onsite.
Compensation: $22.50 per hour.

What you will do
- Act as a positive role model for students while promoting academic engagement and appropriate behavior.
- Support classroom teachers with management, lesson activities, and small group tutoring.
- Assist in the supervision of students during daily meals, arrivals, dismissals, and weekly field trips.
- Foster a linguistically supportive, culturally responsive, and trauma-informed learning environment.
- Help students navigate cultural differences and ensure they feel included throughout the school day.
- Complete mandatory staff training, program meetings, and feedback surveys.
Requirements
- Must be a current IRC Leader in Training (LIT) student.
- Must be at least a rising high school senior (minimum age 17+).
- Must be available for all training days and the entire six-week program duration.
- Must reside in or near New York City and travel to the site daily.
- Fluency in English is required.
- Experience working with children or peers, with a strong interest in refugee/immigrant communities.
Nice to have
- Proficiency in a second language such as Arabic, Dari, Farsi, French, Haitian Creole, Mandarin, Pashto, Russian, Spanish, or Ukrainian.
- Prior experience in classroom procedures or health and safety protocols.
