AI Engineer (Healthcare AI)

Location: Hybrid in San Francisco, with in-person office work 2–3 days per week

Salary: $200K–$275K plus equity

What you will do

• Develop LLM and NLU systems that process clinical notes and medical documents, extract evidence, classify patients by level of care, and generate recommendations.
• Build and operationalize AI and data pipelines for medical-record analysis, clinical assessments, and healthcare quality reviews.
• Create systems that ingest complex medical standards and evaluate provider adherence to care guidelines.
• Establish benchmarking, evaluation, model-governance, and reliability practices for LLM and AI systems.
• Design explainable AI solutions that provide transparency into model decisions for healthcare professionals.
• Collaborate with backend engineers to integrate AI and ML capabilities into the platform.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience building and deploying production applications in backend or data engineering.
• Experience developing LLM-based systems for unstructured, industry-specific records and integrating them into user-facing features.
• Deep understanding of LLM limitations and practices for producing reliable, consistent, and accurate outputs.
• Experience working with medical records to evaluate patient eligibility for assessments, claims authorization, or similar evaluations.
• Strong experience with Python, data pipelines, data science or ML libraries, healthcare data, and HIPAA best practices.
• Knowledge of modern LLM and ML infrastructure and MLOps practices, plus the ability to work as a backend engineering generalist.

• Experience as an early team member or generalist who can take ownership across backend, data, and AI engineering.
