Technical Lead Applied AI Engineer (Healthcare AI)

Location: Palo Alto, United States — hybrid

Salary: $230,000–$280,000 per year, plus equity and benefits

What you will do

• Define the multi-year technical strategy and architecture for agentic workflow infrastructure supporting more than 100 product workflows.
• Represent applied AI engineering in product direction, build-versus-buy, and platform investment decisions.
• Set organization-wide standards for LLM evaluation, deployment, safety, and monitoring.
• Serve as the technical escalation point for complex, high-ambiguity problems across product lines.
• Evaluate emerging models, frameworks, and techniques, including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Mistral technologies.
• Mentor Staff-level engineers and shape technical career ladders in partnership with founders and engineering leadership.

Requirements

• Deep software engineering foundation with Python required and experience architecting company-wide systems.
• 8+ years of production software development experience, including 4+ years building and scaling AI-powered or LLM-driven applications in production.
• Experience setting technical direction and standards adopted across multiple teams.
• Deep expertise in MLOps, model deployment, and workflow automation at an organizational or platform level.
• Ability to operate autonomously on ambiguous, high-stakes technical and strategic problems and influence non-technical stakeholders.
• Bachelor’s degree plus 10 years, or Master’s degree plus 8 years, in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Nice to have

• Recognized expertise in applied AI or agentic systems through talks, publications, open source, or platform-level roles.
• Experience building AI infrastructure in healthcare, finance, or another regulated or high-stakes domain.
• Experience founding or scaling a technical function from the ground up in a startup environment.
• Experience mentoring Staff-level engineers and shaping technical career ladders.
