AI Engineer

Location: Hybrid role based in the San Francisco office, with in-person attendance three days per week for a full 8-hour business day. Remote days follow core business hours with flexibility.

Annual salary: $135,000–$200,000, plus equity and benefits.

What you will do

• Build and operate backend systems that deliver AI-powered product capabilities and personalized member communications.
• Design and improve APIs, distributed services, asynchronous jobs, workflows, and data flows.
• Integrate ML- and AI-backed capabilities into production workflows with reliable interfaces and failure handling.
• Own medium-sized features from planning through implementation, testing, rollout, and follow-up.
• Improve system correctness and operability through retries, idempotency, versioning, graceful degradation, dashboards, and structured logging.
• Trace and resolve issues across APIs, services, queues, databases, model-backed components, and data dependencies.

Requirements

• 2+ years of non-internship, full-time professional software engineering experience.
• Experience building and operating backend services or distributed systems in production.
• Professional experience with Python, TypeScript/JavaScript, Go, Java, Kotlin, or a comparable programming language.
• Experience with software testing, observability, deployment, production support, and at least one cloud platform such as AWS.
• Experience integrating ML- or AI-backed services into production products and working with asynchronous, event-driven, or workflow-based systems.
• Ability to work from the San Francisco office three days per week during full 8-hour business days.

Nice to have

• Experience with Docker, Kafka, PostgreSQL, CI/CD, service monitoring, model deployment, inference, or model versioning.
• Experience with Temporal, Step Functions, Kubernetes, Airflow, or comparable systems.
• Experience with generative AI, LLMs, retrieval, agents, or evaluation systems.
• Experience in healthcare, digital health, fintech, or another regulated or data-sensitive domain.
