Software Engineer, Developer Experience

Location: United States; can be based remotely in the US or work from Figma's hubs in San Francisco or New York. In-person onboarding is required.

Annual base salary: $185,000–$376,000 USD.

What you will do

• Set the technical roadmap and strategy for the Build Systems team.
• Identify developer pain points and design scalable solutions with cross-functional teams and leadership.
• Lead multi-quarter initiatives to reduce build and test times and improve CI reliability.
• Design and operate scalable build systems, distributed CI platforms, test frameworks, and developer tools serving thousands of engineers.
• Architect large-scale AWS infrastructure for reliable, performant, and cost-efficient build pipelines.
• Mentor engineers, provide architectural leadership, and communicate technical decisions across engineering and executive stakeholders.

Requirements

• 5+ years of engineering experience, including 4+ years on Infrastructure, Platform, or Developer Experience teams.
• Deep expertise in build systems such as Bazel, Buck, Pants, or Gradle and experience operating large monorepos.
• Experience optimizing CI/CD, building developer tooling at scale, and designing reliable, high-performance distributed systems.
• Hands-on experience with AWS, CI platforms such as Buildkite, Infrastructure as Code, and strong coding skills in Go, TypeScript, Python, or Ruby.
• Proven technical leadership, including setting technical direction, driving cross-team initiatives, and communicating with varied stakeholders.
• Ability to work from the United States or from one of the US hubs, with in-person onboarding required.

Nice to have

• Experience migrating large codebases to modern build systems, especially Bazel.
• Experience building test frameworks and improving test infrastructure.
• Strong first-principles problem-solving skills, bias for action, and focus on high-impact work.
